The new 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GT: Warning sign for Porsche 911?

While Porsche 911 is currently dominating a sports car segment where the Corvette Stingray, Audi R8, and Jaguar F-Type take part, the Mercedes-Benz just announced 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GT to compete in the highly competitive segment. Is it a warning sign Porsche 911? So far, the German automaker says that the AMG GT will be tagged around $84,000 to make it competitive with the Porsche 911.

Like its big brother, SLS AMG, the AMG GT is developed wholly in-house by the performance-car division of Mercedes-Benz, Mercedes-AMG. However, compared to the previous SLS AMG, the sports car is smaller, lighter, and less powerful. This is the fact that brings the new AMG into the new segment.

How 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG is designed and powered

Designing the 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GT, the German manufacturer seems to take different approach. Compared to the SLS AMG, the car looks more compact. Even though it has the same width, Mercedes-Benz reduces the length by 92 mm and 50 mm for the wheelbase. However, it has increased height by 27 mm. The front end looks identical to the SLS especially for the air intakes and grille. And obvious distinction is the arched roofline extended to the tail. This part may strengthen the assumption that the new AMG GT is designed to take a lead over the 911.

2016 AMG GT is powered by a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8. This is the very first sports car with turbos inside the V engine. The aim is to make the car more compact and less in weight to beef up the response. Two engine versions will be offered. The AMG GT produces 483 hp and 443 pound-feet of torque and the AMG SGT S that produces 503 hp and 479 pound-feet of torque.

It is claimed that the 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GT needs only 3.9 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph, while the AMG GT S takes only 3.7 seconds. The new AMG GT can reach the top speed of 189 mph and 193 mph for the AMG GT S. Taking the fact into consideration, this sports car is absolutely potential to compete with the Porsche 911 in the segment as the 911 S needs 4.3 0 to 60 mph with 188 mph top speed while the Porsche 911 Turbo needs 3.2 seconds with the top speed of 189 mph.

Ride and handling improvements

Other improvements had by the 2016 Mercedes Benz AMG GT are the ride and handling. It features special damper that can reduce the rolling motion of drive train when the car turns. This enables the sports car to be more stable and responsive. For the steering system, Mercedes-AMG surely elaborates the aspect with the variable ratio and power assist that adjusts automatically based on both car’s speed and lateral forces. The improvements have made the car has pleasing steering feel that means more fun to drive.

To end it, we suggest you to check how awesome the interior design is. Featuring new dashboard design that looks powerful, new vents, and center console, the car is undoubtedly ready to rock.
